JACK O'LANTERN, UNA LEGGENDA DI HALLOWEEN

La storia di Jack o’ lantern è la leggenda di Halloween più famosa!

Narra di un fabbro irlandese di nome Jack, ubriacone e taccagno, che la notte di Halloween incontrò il Diavolo in un pub.

La sua anima stava per cadere nelle sue mani, quando Jack ebbe un'idea e chiese al diavolo di trasformarsi in una monetina per permettergli un’ultima bevuta e in cambio il diavolo avrebbe avuto la sua anima.

Il Diavolo accettò e si trasformò in una monetina da sei pence, ma Jack fu abbastanza veloce da riuscire a metterla nel suo portamonete, dove teneva una croce d’argento,che impediva al diavolo di tornare alla sua forma originaria. Jack e il diavolo stipularono allora un nuovo patto: Jack lo avrebbe lasciato andare purché questi, per almeno 10 anni, non tornasse a reclamare la sua anima.

Il Diavolo accettò.


Dieci anni più tardi, il diavolo si ripresentò da Jack, che, sempre con uno stratagemma, riuscì a ingannarlo di nuovo. Jack gli chiese di raccogliere una mela da un albero prima di prendersi la sua anima e, per impedirgli di scendere, il furbo Jack incise una croce sul tronco. Soltanto dopo un lungo battibecco i due giunsero ad un compromesso: in cambio della libertà, il diavolo avrebbe dovuto risparmiare la dannazione eterna a Jack.

Durante la propria vita Jack commise però così tanti peccati che, quando morì, fu rifiutato dal Paradiso e fu costretto a bussare alle porte dell' Inferno, ma il diavolo gli ricordò il patto, e cioè che non lo avrebbe cercato e quindi non poteva farlo entrare. All'osservazione che fosse freddo e buio, il diavolo gli tirò un tizzone ardente, che Jack posizionò all'interno di una rapa intagliata che aveva con sé, affinchè non si spegnesse col vento. Cominciò, così, da quel momento a vagare senza tregua alla ricerca di un luogo in cui riposarsi con il suo lumino in attesa del giorno del Giudizio.

Da questa leggenda deriva il nome JACK O’ LANTERN, Jack e la sua Lanterna, diventato così il simbolo delle anime dannate ed errabonde.

Quando gli Irlandesi, in seguito alla carestia del 1845, abbandonarono il loro paese e si diressero in America, portarono con sé questa leggenda e, poiché le rape in America non erano diffuse come in Irlanda, le sostituirono con le più comuni zucche.

Da allora, la zucca intagliata con la faccia del vecchio fabbro e il lumino all’interno, è forse il simbolo più famoso di Halloween.

The story of Jack o 'lantern is the most famous Halloween legend!

It tells of an Irish blacksmith named Jack, a drunkard and a miser, who met the Devil in a pub on Hallowee's eve.

His soul was about to fall into his hands, when Jack had an idea and asked the devil to turn into a coin to allow him a last drink and in return the devil would have his soul.


The Devil accepted and turned into a six pence coin, but Jack was quick enough to put him in his purse, where he kept a silver cross, which prevented the devil from returning to its original shape. Jack and the devil then made a new deal: Jack would let him go and after 10 years the devil would return to reclaim his soul.

The Devil accepted, but ten  years later, he came back to Jack, who, again with a stratagem, managed to deceive him again. Jack asked him to pick an apple from a tree before taking his soul and, to keep him from getting off, the clever Jack carved a cross on the trunk. Only after a long discussion  the two reach a compromise: in exchange for freedom, the devil would save Jack's eternal damnation.

During his life, however, Jack committed so many sins that, when he died, he was rejected by Heaven and was forced to knock at the gates of Hell, but the devil reminded him of the pact, i.e. he would not look for him and therefore couldn't  let him come in. When Jack said it was cold and dark outside, the devil threw him a burning ember, which Jack placed inside a carved turnip he had with him, so that it would not blow out with the wind. Thus He began, from that moment on, wandering around relentlessly in search of a place to rest with his light waiting for Judgment Day.


From this legend comes the name JACK O 'LANTERN, Jack and his Lantern, which has become the symbol of the damned and errabond souls.


When the Irish, following the famine of 1845, abandoned their country and went to America, they brought with them this legend and, since the turnips are not as widespread in America as in Ireland, they replaced them with the most common pumpkins.


Since then, the carved pumpkin with the face of the old blacksmith and the light inside is perhaps the most famous symbol of Halloween.
